Chapter3:From and Space

Form and Space: The Unity of Opposites
Form and Space is two elements that can not be separated. We understand a figure through its positive and negative space, they could not exist without each other. When they combine together ,we can distinguish the form and space

 Defining Space With Horizontal Elements
The overhead plane can also called ceiling plane or roof plane. It is a horizontal plane located overhead to define volume of space between itself and the ground plane. The shape, size and height above the ground plane determine the qualities of the space as well.

Defining Space with Vertical Linear Elements
L-Shaped Planes generates a volume of space from its center outward as a diagonal. In this case, the "L" shape is not really connect, but you can still sense the L shape in that space.

Qualities of Architectural Space:
The spatial qualities of form, proportion, scale, texture, light, and sound are depend on the enclosure of a space. These qualities will definitely affect our perception, experience and interest.
For the light,it create shade and shadow, it really determine the space of a room, and articulates the form within it.

 Openings in Space-Defining Elements:
It is mostly determined by the windows and doors. The door is an entry and also affect the pattern of movement and use within it; the window allow light and view to affect the visual relationship form in and out. At corner is an opening that placed along the edge or the corner of a wall r ceiling plane.

  2. Good job on your Form and Space study. One question about the horizontal line defining space is that why did you drew the line little under? I thought you pointed the ceiling is the horizontal line that defines the space. If you meant that way, I think it is better to draw the horizon line on upper part.
